A slim, long-tailed, small headed and billed plover of medium size, common throughout North America.  Double black breast bands and reddish orange rump are distinctive.  Common in fields and on shorelines.  Nests on open ground.  Present year-round in Texas.  Known for “broken wing” display that is used to lure predators away from their nest.  Insect feeders.
