A chunky, dark-eyed brown owl with dark barring on the upper breast and dark streaking below. Common in woods and swamps. Present in Texas all year, ranges across Canada throughout the Eastern U.S. A. and on down into Central America. Nests in tree cavities and eats small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
