Most common small shorebird of North American beaches. Long distance migrant, breeds in Arctic regions. Lightest in coloration of sandpiper family. Scampers for food along water's edge. Thickset small wader with black bill and legs. Often hunches its back in threat display to protect feeding ground. Highly gregarious.
