Breeding plumage has blackish neck and golden ears.  Dusky above and white below in winter.  Nests in large fresh water colonies.  Aquatic diving birds present in Texas November through March.  Confused with ducks but sit higher in the water and have pointed beaks and longer, more slender necks.  Frequently in our surf. Young ride on parent’s backs.
